HistoryThe "Tauranga Harbour Challenge" race was started by Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club Inc in 1996. From its inception, the Harbour Challenge grew rapidly becoming the biggest long distance regatta in New Zealand, with over 500 paddlers attending each year. Due to the scale of the event, Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club approached the surrounding clubs for support in running the regatta. In 2003 the Harbour Challenge was jointly run by the three clubs, Hoe Aroha Whanau o Mauao Outrigger Canoe Club (Mount Maunganui), Maketu Waka Ama Club (Maketu), and Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club (Tauranga). The event's continuing success is largely due to the 80+ volunteers who dedicate their time before, during and after.
