General Information

The inaugrel W1and Surfski Ocean Race is targeted at the good to elite paddlers. 28km of Ocean Racing is set to separate the best paddlers from the very good. The event seeks to develop elite ocean paddling in New Zealand and aims to become part of the World circuit for Ocean W1 and Surfski Racing. Top NZ competitors have already raced in this event and have marked it as a must do race, so make it one of yours.

The Race

Competitors will meet at the Papamoa Domain (at the intersection of Domain Road and Papamoa Tavern). The Race Briefing will be held at Papamoa Domain and the race will start from this site. Refer to race programme for times etc. Parking is available at Papamoa Domain.

Competitors will race from Papamoa Domain into the ocean and head towards Motiti Island, turning at two buoys at Motiti Island and returning to Papamoa Domain. All categories will start together. Click here for the Race Course and here for the Race Rules

Cut off time: Due to course distance and for safety reasons, a cut off time will be placed at the turning point at Motiti Island. The time will be determined on the day, based on conditions. Competitors must ensure they are capable of competing and able to provide proof of capability upon request.

Coverage

High profile event coverage will be given to this event and the whole Waka Fest weekend. Paddlers may be requested to sign a media waiver and provide a paddling profile for filmed media coverage.

After Function

All competitors are invited to a high performance late lunch, containing healthy race recovery dining, where discussion will be held on elite performance and video coverage of the event. This will be an excellent event not to be missed. Please note this is only for competitors, therefore if you wish to attend limited tickets may be available for sale following close of entries.
