Waka Relay Information

Date: Sunday 5th April 2009
Race Course: Mount Surf Beach, around Rabbit Island and return to Main Beach
Distance 7km W6 and 2.5km W1 teams race.
Entry Fee: $15 per person
Categories: Mens, Womens - Teams of 6 = W6 team (including 1 x W1 paddler)
Prizes: Cash prizes for top 3 placings plus great spot prizes
Grand Prize: A Grand Waka Fest Prize will be awarded to one of the clubs who attend the event! A club will need to race in the Saturday and Sunday events.

General Information

The Waka Sixes race is a fun day of racing with a huge competitive edge. Teams of 6 paddlers will comprise a team of 6 paddlers including a singles paddler. The day will comprise a relay event ending with a great prize giving and send off at the Mount Surf Club.

The Race

  • Competitors will meet at Moturiki Beach at the Mount Main Beach, adajcent to the cenotaph.
  • The race will start with a Le Mans beach start, a W1 single paddler (from the W6 team) will paddle around Rabbit Island, returning to Moturiki Beach (2.5km).
  • The paddler will join the W6 team to paddle a 7km course along the Mount Beach, returning to Moturiki Beach.
  • The team will bring their canoe up to a designated line and send a marked runner on a beach sprint to the finish line

Coverage

High profile event coverage will be given to this event and the whole Waka Fest weekend. Paddlers may be requested to sign a media waiver and provide a paddling profile for filmed media coverage.

After Function

The Waka Fest final function and prizegiving will be held at the Mount Surf Club. Racing is expected to finish at 1pm allowing time for paddlers to travel home. The prize giving will award the Event Champion and Grand Event Prize to one of the competing clubs. Competitors must be present to collect any prize money, awards and spot prizes.

Parking

Parking is available along the Mount Main Beach and side roads. Trailer parking for canoes will be arranged for secure off site storage and will be returned for loading following racing. The event organisers will provide transport for the canoe trailers.
